What it does: Protects the needle tip from damage
The needle cap is a protective cover that fits over the front of the airbrush, shielding the exposed needle tip from bending or damage when the airbrush is set down or transported. It’s the cone-shaped or cylindrical cover you see at the very front of most airbrushes.
Always refit the needle cap when you’re not actively painting. A bent needle tip — even slightly bent — causes asymmetrical spray and must be replaced or professionally straightened.
Some airbrushes have a separate needle cap and air cap (two front covers); others combine them into one piece. Check your airbrush manual to understand which covers serve which purpose.
Don’t confuse with: The air cap, which shapes and directs airflow and is typically left on during painting. The needle cap is a protection-only piece that’s removed for painting.
