What it does: Controls and stabilizes air pressure output
The regulator is a device — either built into the compressor or fitted inline — that lets you set and maintain consistent air pressure output regardless of how much air the compressor is generating. Without a regulator, pressure fluctuates as the compressor cycles on and off.
How to use:
- Most regulators have a knob that increases/decreases pressure and a gauge that shows current pressure.
- Turn clockwise to increase pressure, counterclockwise to decrease.
- Set pressure before you start painting; fine-tune based on spray results on test paper.
- Lock the setting with the lock ring (if equipped) to prevent accidental changes.
Moisture trap combo: Many regulators come combined with a moisture trap — a useful two-in-one fitment.
Investing in a good regulator pays dividends in consistent spray quality. Cheap regulators can fluctuate or fail to hold pressure accurately.
